Choosing a Navratri chaniya choli skirt

The panelled ones — rust, red and mustard, midnight, jewel — are the traditional garba silhouette. Each panel is a separate colour, so the skirt reads as stripes at rest and blurs into a wheel of colour when you spin. They photograph well under lights and they hide the inevitable.

The single-colour ones work harder. Rani pink georgette with silver gota, navy with a heavy gold border, navy with a Kutchi mirror band, off white with pink mirror work, black with multicolour appliqué — these sit closer to a party lehenga, and they carry a plain choli or a shirt better than a busy panel does.

Flair runs between six and eight metres depending on the colourway. Both open into a full circle on a turn; the difference is weight and how sharply the hem lifts. Every skirt is stitched over canvas with an inner attached, so the shape is built in and there is no separate can-can to buy or manage.

Sizing and fit

Free size. The waist is drawstring and adjustable, and fits comfortably up to 42 inches — there is no zip or hook to size, so it accommodates a wide range without alteration.

The length is 41 inches from waist to hem, which sits at the ankle on most heights between 5'2" and 5'6". If you are taller, wear it with a heel rather than letting the hem ride up; if you need it shorter, take it up from the waist so the border work along the hem stays intact.

What you receive

The skirt only — no choli and no dupatta. That is deliberate: at this price it is meant to be the piece you rotate through the nine nights, changing the top and the dupatta rather than the whole outfit.

Styling it

A plain white cotton shirt, sleeves rolled, tucked in — the way the photographs show it — is the easiest and the most current. Beyond that: a fitted black or off white choli for a traditional look, or a cropped kediyu-style top.

Oxidised silver is the right jewellery for all ten colourways. Stacked bangles on both wrists, a heavy choker and long jhumkas. Keep the waist visible so the skirt reads full — a belt or a tucked shirt does more for the silhouette than a loose top.

Care

Hand wash separately in cold water for the first two or three washes; the deeper shades and the panelled colourways will run at first. Dry in shade. Press the gota, mirror and Kutchi work from the reverse side, and store the skirt hanging rather than folded so the flair does not crease at the waist.
