Morbani Georgette Navratri Chaniya Choli

Morbani is a georgette Navratri chaniya choli where the dupatta does the work. Both colourways carry a 2.50 metre dupatta finished with sequins, thread embroidery and mirror work, and the skirt underneath is left to a soft tonal print so the two never compete.

Georgette is the reason this one photographs the way it does. It is light enough to lift on a turn and keep moving after you stop, which is exactly what you want from an eight metre skirt on a garba floor.

The two colourways

• Blue Leheriya — a blue and teal leheriya stripe across the skirt and dupatta, paired with a deep green blouse edged in round mirrors. The dupatta carries mirror work clusters with gold bead drops along the border. The green against the blue is the old Gujarati pairing and it still reads best at night.
• Red Floral — a tonal leaf print in red on red, with a sheer red dupatta embroidered in gold thread and sequins in a trailing floral vine. Dressier than the blue, and the one to pick if you want it to carry past Navratri into a sangeet.

Why georgette works for garba

Cotton is the workhorse for nine nights; georgette is what you wear when you want the skirt to float. It weighs almost nothing for the amount of flair it holds, so the eight metres open fully on a turn without dragging, and the fall keeps its shape for photographs long after a cotton skirt has creased.

The trade off is that georgette is a fabric you have to be a little careful with — it snags, and it does not like a hot iron. Kept properly it stays sharp for years.

Sizing and fit

The lehenga waist is adjustable and fits comfortably up to 42 inches. The blouse arrives fully stitched at 38 inches with margin inside to support up to 42, so a tailor can open it out in a few minutes — worth doing in the week before Navratri rather than on the way to the ground.

Lehenga length is 41 inches from waist to hem, which sits at the ankle on most heights between 5'2" and 5'6". Taller than that, wear it with a heel. Shorter, take the hem up rather than letting it drag — georgette picks up dirt off a garba floor faster than cotton does.

What you receive

Lehenga, blouse and dupatta. The canvas and inner are already attached to the skirt and the blouse arrives stitched, so the set is wearable straight out of the packet apart from any fit adjustment you choose to make.

Styling it

The blue takes oxidised silver and coloured stone jewellery — the green blouse already carries the contrast, so let the necklace pick up the same stones rather than adding a third colour. The red takes gold, or a heavy multicoloured layered choker if you want it louder.

For garba, pin the dupatta at the shoulder and tie the loose end at the waist. A worked georgette dupatta this light will swing into your face on a fast round otherwise, and the mirror work is heavy enough to sting.

Care

Dry clean is safest for the dupatta because of the sequins and mirror work. If you hand wash the skirt, do it separately in cold water and never wring georgette — press the water out flat. Dry in shade. Iron on low heat from the reverse side with a cloth in between, keeping well away from the sequins, and store on a padded hanger rather than folded so the fall does not crease along one line.
